Detrital sedimentary graded beds are formed from erosional, depositional, and weathering forces. After lithification, shale, siltstone, and sandstone are formed from the detrital deposits. Cross-bedding in a sandstone that was originally deposited by rivers. GRADED BEDDING means that the grain size within a bed decreases upwards. Most sedimentary layers show a basically consistent grain size throughout their thickness or show essentially random variations in grain size. Graded bedding helps determine the vertical direction in sedimentary rocks. Because sedimentary rocks are stratified in age sequence, as summarized in the principles of relative geologic age, layers of sedimentary rock act as a record of how that area was changing, physically and biologically, over the extent of geologic time spanned by the sedimentary rock layers. Sedimentary structures such as cross-beds, graded beds, and mud cracks are useful for determining which way was up in the original sequence of sediments.
