Reader Laura sent us a wonderful easy and cheap kitchen project she just completed: A custom knife block for a kitchen drawer. The IKEA model she wanted was discontinued, and others were too expensive for her budget. While knife blocks and wall racks work well for many kitchens, not everyone has the counter or wall space for these items—and people with pets or young children may not feel comfortable with some of those products. Here are two alternatives: a standard in-drawer knife organizer, with slots, and a product called the the Knife Dock, which has flexible dividers made from a combination of cork and rubber. Another way to build knife storage into a countertop is the Knife Box, which can be added to an existing countertop. Knife drawer organizers are either moderately priced and not custom or custom-made and expensive. Quite often, I put them away wet in a wooden drawer block.
I got the idea to make my own wood dividers for this post on Under the Table Dreaming. I really wanted a knife block divider in the drawer so my husband came up with the idea to use an old piece of cedar (I had from the Block letters that everyone in blog land has done. Shuffling through blades haphazardly thrown into a drawer is as fun as it is dangerous. Making this out of a dishwasher safe material would be great. In your version, are the wood blocks separate pieces or is it a slab of wood that has been scored? My guess is separate pieces, but then how do you keep the blade spacing if all the blocks are glued together, orrr, are the separate blocks spaced and glued to the drawer liner? I might really be overthinking this one, but I just love the idea.
