Minwax calls its liquid High Performance Wood Hardener. Abatron calls its product LiquidWood. The liquids are generally used as a sort of primer for the putty-type patchers, strengthening the bottom and sides of cavities that will be filled by the patcher. Minwax wood hardener is NOT waterproof! I tried it a couple of years ago to stabilize some maple burl. I took the wood out of my vaccum chamber, and since it was a warm day, placed in on a picnic table in our backyard, where I forgot it at the end of that day. If I want to try stabilizing without spending a lot on the liquid (shipping is expensive) can I just use Minwax Wood Hardener under vacuum?

Minwax High Performance Wood is made up of solvents that carry resin deep into the pores of the wood where they evaporate and leave behind hardened resin resulting in hardened wood. I used (don’t laugh too hard please) Minwax wood hardener brushed on liberally to strengthen the weak fibers. It seemed to work fairly well, although I am concerned about it affecting how paint will take.
