In addition to being a lower grade, the face veneer on inexpensive types of plywood can be as thin as 1/100 compared to about 1/40 on better material. Plywood grades are determined by a veneer quality on the face and back of each panel. There are many different plywood grades on the market, from marine to exterior and AA to CDX. Interior plywood is available in most grades, as well as a number of hardwood species such as birch, oak and cherry. Structural aircraft-grade plywood is more commonly manufactured from African mahogany or American birch veneers that are bonded together in a hot press over hardwood cores of basswood or poplar or from European Birch veneers throughout. Usually faced with hardwood, including ash, oak, red oak, birch, maple, mahogany, Philippine mahogany (often called lauan, luan or meranti and having no relation to true mahogany), rosewood, teak and a large number of other hardwoods.
